MANGROVE FORESTS ARE VITAL
TO PROTECTING OUR SHORES

Mangroves benefit the coast in more ways than one, from hurricane defense to providing marine ecosystems for healthier fisheries. Atlantis continues to actively grow mangroves in an on-property estuary and donates them to various non-profit organizations such as the Bahamas National Trust (BNT) whose efforts protect and preserve the coastal environment of the Bahamas.

Since early 2010, the resort has donated more than 3,500 mangrove seedlings for local wetland restoration projects. With help from Atlantis, BNT has expanded mangrove habitats and learned important data about planting mangroves in the proper timeframe to survive and withstand hurricane threats and further protect the coastline.

Mangroves provide a healthy ecosystem for many sea life species starting their lives, such as baby lobsters, young conch, small groupers, and various types of snappers that eventually venture out to deeper waters. These important coastal plants also protect the water quality by removing nutrients and pollutants from stormwater runoff before they reach seagrass habitats and coral reefs, they and contribute to the local abundance of seafood.

DID YOU KNOW?

    •  Mangrove forests have shrunk significantly over the last 40 years, with around 35% of mangrove forest lost globally.

    •  Atlantis has donated over 3,500 mangrove seedlings for local wetland restoration projects.

    •  Mangrove forests stabilize the coastline by reducing erosion caused by storm surges, currents, waves and tides.

    •  Mangroves protect water quality by removing nutrients and pollutants from stormwater runoff before they reach seagrass habitats and coral reefs.

    •  Mangroves provide nursery habitat for many commercial fish and shellfish, contributing to the local abundance of seafood.
